Louann K. Harkins – Class of 1946

Louann K. Harkins, 80, of Oberlin [PA], passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 28, 2011, after a two year battle with ovarian cancer.

Louann was born January 3, 1931, in Pittsburgh. She attended the Central Institute for the Deaf for eleven years, was a 1950 graduate of Brookville High School, and a 1954 graduate of Thiel College. Louann enjoyed a long career as a toxicologist until she retired from Broward General Medical Center in Florida in 1992. She was a dedicated sign language educator who impressed upon every life she touched. She was an active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Penbrook. She had strong faith, a passion for life, and a strong sense of loyalty to her family and friends.

She was the wife of James R. Harkins, Jr., who predeceased her, and the loving and supportive mother of Mark Harkins of Valdosta, GA, Becki Gorman of Oberlin, Deb Neifert of Susquehanna Township, and Maureen “Moe” Harkins who predeceased her.  Adding to the richness of her life were her grandchildren: Janeen Latin, Lessli Gingery, Brooke Neifert, Sarah Gordon, Brittany Harkins, Samantha Harkins, and Nora K. Eakin; her great-grandchildren: Ashley Gascon, Michelle, Krista, and Megan Latin, Joshua, Caleb, and Elijah Raber, Alexis Gordon, Nicolette and Taylor Eakin.  Left behind to remember her zest for life are also her sisters Joellyn McIlvaine and Georgie Blackwood, her brother William Blackwood, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at 11 a.m., Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Penbrook, 2730 Booser Avenue, Harrisburg, PA, 17103.
